BACKSTORY 🥬: this happened to me with my first BACKSTORY 🥬: this happened to me with my first born, and I FREAKED out. The first time I tried massaging it out, but it didn’t help. It was sooo painful to the point where I couldn’t sleep for several days, so I ended up getting a needle and poking my armpit lumps to secrete the milk out externally (which I don’t recommend since you can get an infection). I was desperate for relief though and it worked. This time with my second born, it happened again in both armpits! I got conflicting advice (some said to heat, others said to ice) but the CORRECT thing to do as told by my lactation consultant is to ice after every breastfeeding session, and use cold washed cabbage leaves for 1-day (on and off) to STOP the armpit from producing milk. Cabbage leaves can decrease milk supply which is why it’s recommended to just do it for 1-day, to treat the engorgement. When people told me to heat my armpits to loosen up the milk duct and massage it out, this made the clogged duct worse because it stimulated more milk production. My clogged ducts got bigger, my armpits felt like they were on fire and SO painful. In my case I had to STOP it with ice and cabbage leaves. After 1-day of cabbage leaves, and 3-days of icing on and off my clogged armpit lumps were nearly gone. I know my situation is unique (about 5% have axillary breast tissue that extends up into the armpits like me) but sharing this so no-one else freaks out if this happens, and you know what to do. Now I want to know who thought of #cabbageleaves as a cure to breast engorgement. This consisted of dresses, stretchy high-waisted skirts, and elastic trousers.
